Disconnect on a barge cruise
The Canal du Midi runs through the villages of Poilhes and Capestang, and passes close to the villages of Cruzy and Quarante.
It has left its mark on the landscape, the villages and the people. By bike, on foot or by boat, you can walk along the towpath and discover numerous engineering structures: siphon weir, aqueduct, weirs…
Riquet, of course, but also Vauban left their mark on this magnificent work. If you’re travelling by boat, you can dock at the ports of Poilhes and Capestang.
In Capestang, you’ll find the Harbour Master’s Office within the tourist information centre, where you can find out about the many port services available, such as hiring a boat that doesn’t require a licence for an hour, half a day or a full day from the port of Capestang.
Your campsite near the Canal du Midi
Whether you’re just popping in to admire it or following it all the way from Toulouse to Sète, the Canal du Midi is one of the most majestic routes to explore on foot, by bike or by boat. An iconic symbol of the Languedoc and the Midi, it stretches for 250 kilometres, winding gently through vineyards, rolling hills and villages with narrow streets.
Close to the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Languedoc, it’s a hiking paradise.
Nearly 33 km of trails, from the campsite in Saint-Chinian to the Canal du Midi, via Cessenon-sur-Orb, Cazouls lès Béziers, Maureilhan and Colombiers, have been laid out as greenways. Between Saint-Chinian and Maureilhan, the trail follows theold local railroad line. Then, between Maureilhan and the Canal du Midi, it takes low-traffic local roads.
This “voie verte” will delight cycling and hiking enthusiasts, and numerous connections are possible with the FFC mountain bike circuits of the Terroir Saint-Chinianais.
Departure from the center of Saint-Chinian, rue de l’Ancienne Voie Ferrée, near the Tourist Office.
